25th August 2007: East Fife 3, Stranraer 1 (Barrs Scottish League Division 3) Three months ago it was the Fife who confined our visitors to a season in the bottom league so we were suitably apprehensive as we made our way to Bayview this afternoon; our expectation, nothing less than the sternest test so far this term. After the match we could only looked bemusedly at each other and ask, 'why all the hoo-ha?'. Not to put too fine a point on it, Stranraer were utter shite! And we looked exactly what we are - table toppers who're there on merit. If all our games this season are this easy then it'll be the most straightforward title ever won.... On the basis of his first half performance, Kevin Fotheringham should be expecting a call from La Liga next week. Two first half goals and another too good efforts in between that went close meant that this one was done and dusted before the ref had blown for half time. To be fair, although big Kev took his goals well, the Stranraer keeper picked this afternoon to have an absolute stinker - well, let's hope for his team's sake that it was just a bad day at the office; if this is as good as he gets, it could be Galloway League football for them next season. The carnage continued into the second half so it was a real bolt from the blue when our visitors pulled one back just past the hour mark. With Greig McDonald at the sidelines receiving treatment after being done by a big blue donkey (ooh-er...), Stranraer took full advantage and, give them their due, fired a brilliant equaliser leaving debut boy Fox helpless between the Fife sticks. Any worries we had about the Blues coming back into this one however, were shortlived as we refused to let the setback affect us. Just five minutes later, Paul McManus, brilliantly beat Stranraer's offside trap and casually took the ball around their keeper and slid it home. Great goal, another three in the bag and all points secured. With Tuesday night's trip to Paisley in mind the boss was able to make a couple of changes to ensure that everyone will be prepared for the CIS match. And one of the subs was unlucky not to add to the goalscoring. Just before the end of the game Stevie Nicholas banged in another but, wi' the ref allegedly having three-one on the fixed odds, it was ruled offside and chalked off. But them's the breaks and, let's be honest, if we continue bangin' in the goals and, more importantly, delivering performances like today's then I for one will not be complaining. So, with the Fife lording it over the rest, I can head off wi' ma missus to Paris for the bank holiday weekend. As you all surely know by now a trip to Glasgow Airport is far enough - three miles further up the road is just a trek too far. Keep me posted and c'mon the Fife - go do them Buddies!
